January 2010
A recent report recommends simplification of the plasma cell dyscrasia diagnostic algorithm mentioned in current International Myeloma Working Group guidelines, indicating that only serum protein electrophoresis (SPE) and Freelite free light chain (FLC) tests may be needed in many cases.

The authors reported that the combination of SPE plus FLC has the same sensitivity as SPE, serum immunofixation electrophoresis (IFE) and FLC for patients with multiple myeloma, Waldenstrom's macroglobulinaemia (WM) and light chain deposition disease.

The award-winning Freelite serum free light chain assays are available on the majority of popular nephelometric and turbidimetric analysers used in clinical laboratories.
