It's magnetic attraction

Now available from Radleys Discovery Technologies (RDT) are special magnetic stirrer-bar designs that provide optimal stirring performance for a range of synthesis vessel shapes and different sample types.

Many RDT stirring bars contain rareearth magnets that offer advantages over conventional magnets. However, it should be noted that all magnetic stirring bars lose magnetism over time and with use and should be replaced periodically. RDT has developed a magnetic stirring bar that will optimize the performance of each of its parallel synthesisers. After extensive testing that included analysis of criteria such as depth of vortex, speed at which the stirrer bar decouples and sample viscosity, RDT is able to recommend specific bars for each of its parallel synthesis systems. For instance, a rare earth cross-shape stirrer bar is recommended for use with Carousel reaction tubes because it provides a powerful stirring action, even with higher viscosity samples, while an elliptical bar is recommended for use with round-bottomed flasks because it offers the best stability at higher speeds.
