Accurate analysis from the Pentra 400

In late 2003 a fire destroyed the entire biochemistry laboratory at Strathclyde UniversityÆs Department of Applied Physiology. Just nine months later the department took delivery of a newly launched ABX Pentra 400 benchtop clinical chemistry analyser from Horiba ABX.

Dr Richard Ferguson said: ôOur team is investigating a number of different topics, such as skeletal muscle energetics, metabolism and thermoregulation. All require highly accurate analysis of a range of muscle and blood metabolites, even solutes in sweat.ö As several of the teamÆs assays require analysis of human skeletal muscle biopsies, where sample volume is extremely low, high sensitivity is crucial. ôThe Pentra 400 will be used for intensive periods of time following completion of experiments where hundreds of samples maybe collected at once. As a consequence, the department needed a system that was reliable and robust to cope with such intensive usage,ö added Richard.
