Time to get real?

The Mastercycler ep realplex from Eppendorf (pictured in action below) brings advances in quantitative PCR technology.

Excitation is achieved by an array of 96 individual LEDs which have a longer lifespan than halogen lamps. With a minimal number of moving parts in the optical detection module the result is a real-time PCR system that is more robust and faster than filter systems. Consistently the high sensitivity and reproducibility of results are maintained, while downtime is minimised. Two thermomodules are available: æstandardÆ or æhigh-speedÆ. Both can be combined with two optical modules, enabling the use of almost all the fluorescent dyes used in real-time PCR. EppendorfÆs qPCR applications specialist Cynthia Potter said that usability is also an attribute of the new system: ôAn intuitive user interface ensures fast PCR and assay set-up, and simple transfer of protocols from other real-time PCR systems. For the greatest flexibility in experimental design and data analysis, the realplex offers a completely open system concept and a total of six different software modules.ö
