South-westÆs transition to Cytyc completed

Poole Hospital NHS Trust has introduced a new cervical screening system from Cytyc. The NHS South West Strategic Health Authority oversees the largest region in England, covering a geographical area stretching west from Cheltenham, Swindon and Bournemouth to the Isles of Scilly, and serves 1.3 million women in the screening age range.

All hospitals in the region have been converting to the ThinPrep Pap Test liquidbased cytology (LBC) system since October 2003, when the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommended the use of LBC as the primary means for collecting and processing samples for cervical screening. Poole Hospital’s conversion means that all NHS hospitals in the south-west of England have completed transition to the Cytyc system .

The ThinPrep method works by producing a thin-layer cell preparation, which is more representative and easier to read than a conventional cervical smear. Therefore, this can provide far more accurate test results, fewer unsatisfactory smears that result in unnecessary repeat tests, and a shorter turnaround time for results to be reported.
