Updated standards of conduct, performance and ethics introduced

The Health Professions Council (HPC) has launched its revised Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics (SCPE) for all registrants and potential registrants. The SCPE are the fundamental standards the HPC considers essential to protect the health and wellbeing of the public.

The SCPE explain what registrants must keep to, what kind of behaviour is likely to lead to the HPC taking disciplinary action and ultimately the responsibilities of being a health professional.

The HPC consulted on the revised standards between July and September 2007, and the consultation document was sent to over 300 organisations. The standards were reviewed to make sure they were fit for purpose, and that they continued to meet the expectations of the public, registrants and other stakeholders.

Amendments have been made to Standard 4, providing important information about conduct, competence or health; to Standard 5, keeping professional knowledge and skills up to date; and to Standard 8, the effective supervision of tasks delegated to others. Minor amendments, including changes to terminology, have been made to several other standards.

A copy of the revised SCPE has been sent to all registrants; however, it is also available to download from the HPC website or by email from [email protected]
