Recent anniversaries

While last month saw the much-reported 60th anniversary of the introduction of the National Health Service, it was also the month in which Louise Brown celebrated her 30th birthday.

The latter fact is newsworthy because Louise’s conception and birth brought the terms ‘test tube ‘and ‘in vitro fertilisation’ to the public consciousness back in 1978, and was an early example of the medical laboratory’s crucial role in increasingly sophisticated clinical practice.
