New directors to lead NHS Blood and Transplant service modernisation

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) has appointed Dr Clive Ronaldson as director of patient services and Andy Young as director of blood donation.

Having been interim managing director of the National Blood Service since July last year, Clive Ronaldson took up his new appointment in July. Previously, Clive spent 17 years with Baxter Healthcare, then joined BioProducts Laboratory (BPL) in 1993, where subsequently he became managing director.

Commenting on his appointment, Clive Ronaldson said: “I look forward to the challenges ahead in the consistent and safe supply of blood for patients and the delivery of an efficient service for the NHS. Over the next three years, we will be focusing on delivering greater efficiencies in our testing and processing services, while continuing to provide a wide range of specialist blood services.”

Andy Young will join NHSBT in September from the O2 Arena in London, where he has spent that last two years as arena director. Previously, he spent five years as head of operations and commercial services at the Science Museum. Commenting on his appointment, Andy Young said: “I am absolutely delighted to be joining NHSBT. It is an exciting time to be leading the blood donation team. I know there will be many challenges ahead, but also the prospect of making further improvements to the service we offer to donors and, ultimately, patients.”
