Vaccine for tuberculosis

Researchers at Aberystwyth University have licensed ground-breaking research to a nonprofit product development partnership working to develop new, more effective vaccines against TB.

The Aeras Global TB Vaccine Foundation, founded to develop new, cost-effective TB vaccines for use in the developing world, has licensed discovery of a protein that is able to ‘wake up’ dormant Mycobacterium tuberculosis organisms. The research could be used to develop a vaccine that either stops M. tuberculosis taking hold, or to ‘wake up’ the bacteria deliberately in a controlled way so that they can be destroyed with antibiotics.
