Simple bowel cancer screening test

The new ScheBo M2-PK Quick rapid test for colorectal cancer screening of faecal samples extends the product range for testing M2-PK as a tumour biomarker, alongside the two existing quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) tests for M2-PK in EDTA-plasma and stool samples. M2 pyruvate kinase (M2-PK) has a critical function in glucose metabolism and high concentrations of the dimeric isoform are found in cancer.

In addition to its high sensitivity, a major patient benefit of the ScheBo M2-PK Quick is the simplicity of sample collection. It only requires a small faecal sample from a single stool passage, which is collected using the handy ‘stool catcher’ and Quick-Prep device supplied in the kit. The test is easily run in the laboratory, and results are available within about 15 minutes. A ‘positive’ result requires follow-up investigation (eg colonoscopy) to confirm or exclude the presence of colorectal cancer or polyps.
