Patient Safety First: International Biomedical Laboratory Science Day – 15 April

The purpose of Biomedical Laboratory Science (BLS) Day is to increase the awareness of the role that biomedical scientists play in providing healthcare, as they have an important role in diagnosis, quality development and assurance, treatment, research, development, and public health. International Biomedical Laboratory Science Day, to be held this year on 15 April, gives the profession the opportunity to promote and celebrate its successes and achievements.

The International Federation of Biomedical Laboratory Science (IFBLS) established Biomedical Laboratory Science Day in 1996 at the World Congress in Oslo, Norway, to promote and celebrate the key role of biomedical laboratory personnel in diagnostic and preventive healthcare systems.

Biomedical scientists represent one of the largest groups of healthcare professionals yet their role in medicine is poorly understood by patients and their families, and even colleagues within healthcare administration. Guidelines for celebrating BLS Day can be found at the link below.
