Electrochemical assay attracts global interest

The latest diagnostic technology will provide quantitative, laboratory-grade analytical results at the point of sampling, giving accurate answers to important questions and allowing fast decision-making in the field.

The new hand-held AgPlus analytical platform has been brought to the worldwide diagnostics market by AgPlus Diagnostics. Invented by Dr Rob Porter and Dr Mateus Symanski, the technology was developed in the Biodiagnostics Division of the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) through a three-year strategic research fellowship. The result is the development of a unique analytical platform into a fully functional, portable and cost effective system that can deliver fully quantitative results with accuracy and sensitivity that is comparable to laboratory analysers.

Science behind the technology
The AgPlus Diagnostics analytical platform utilises its electrochemical immunoassay technology in a microfluidic chip format. The signalling and measurement system, based on the detection of amplified silver ions by anodic stripping voltammetry, allows extremely sensitive, accurate and quantifiable results to be obtained from a very small sample volume (50 µL) in under 10 minutes, using a battery-operated, fully-portable hand-held reader.

AgPlus technology is suitable for multiplexing, allowing several tests to be carried out on a single sample using the same hand-held platform. Furthermore, as the reader is communication enabled (including USB, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity), results from any number of systems can be transmitted and stored in a central location.
