Celebrating National Pathology Week

Recently, pathologists and laboratory scientists came together to celebrate another National Pathology Week (NPW), during which they staged events to increase awareness and improve the public understanding of pathology.

This year the NPW theme was ‘Pathology: prevention, diagnosis, treatment’ and built on the success of the previous year when some 240 events were registered by pathologists, specialist organisations, hospitals and laboratory scientists in the UK, including lectures, laboratory visits, workshops and exhibitions.

Some of the fun events organised this year included a junior doctors’ careers fair, a competition on the art of pathology, a microbiology open day for students, laboratory training for people interested in a career in pathology and healthcare science, and lectures on historical post-mortems.

International Pathology Day, on 16 November, emphasised the role of pathology in healthcare around the world. It featured a round-table event and webinar on how to strengthen pathology education and training in low- and middle-income countries.
