Research in brief

Research in the medical laboratory provides opportunities both for the seasoned professional and also those in the early stages of their career. The work reported below reflects first on an audit of the use of order communications and the need for effective training of clinicians, and second the potential problem of false-positive bloodspot results in inherited metabolic disease screening.

Order communications: a quality improvement?

While electronic requesting has had a positive impact on sample order entry and turnaround time, it has resulted in the appearance of another non-conformance. Here, Julie Hawken and colleagues reflect on audit results.

Order communications (Order Comms) enables clinicians to request tests electronically from laboratories. To request investigations, patient details are entered in all mandatory fields, required tests are selected and a confirmation clicked when the sample has been collected. A barcode label is attached to the sample, which is scanned in the laboratory.
