A revolution in tissue block archiving and storage

Download PDF version of article

The Thermo Scientific Arcos block archiving system represents a revolution in tissue block management to optimise workflow and patient safety. As cancer diagnostics and treatment methods improve and the average age of the population increases, so too does the quantity of blocks being archived each year. Bringing block archiving into the 21st century, the Arcos can improve safety and security by ensuring full chain of custody of these valuable patient specimens.

There is no more need for time-consuming manual sorting of tissue blocks after sectioning. In just minutes, the Arcos scans hundreds of blocks and records their exact location — from the position in the barcoded tray to the final storage point in the archive. At any time and very quickly, a particular specimen can be located for retrieval by searching the database and scanning out using the associated PDA.

Two major laboratories, in Wales and The Netherlands, are already experiencing significant improvements in security and workflow, having adopted this innovative but simple technology. Find out more in this issue.
