Workstation upgrade for North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Trust’s histopathology laboratory

North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Trust has partnered with Solmedia, Roche and P+HS Architects to equip its new histopathology laboratory with workstations that will maximise the benefits of the laboratory environment. The new workstations will improve employee retention, increase efficiency and productivity whilst also lowering the risk of repetitive strain injury (RSI), sickness and fatigue.

Members of the trust were first introduced to the Ergotec workstation at the IBMS Congress back in March 2022, where Solmedia, in partnership with German manufacturer Slee Medical, was showcasing the ergonomic workstation, which is specifically designed for laboratories and addressed workplace issues with its ergonomic solutions. The Ergotec offers features that directly address repetitive strain injuries, fatigue and diversity as well as being fully customisable to meet individual needs.

To meet the requirements for the new laboratory, Solmedia worked with Sharron Pooley, Service Manager, Cellular Science, Tees Valley Pathology at North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Trust, and architect Sharon Cook, to agree on specifications for the workstations which would offer the best solution possible.

Multiple Ergotec workstations were installed, all with power and RJ45 ethernet sockets to power any equipment and allow access to the internet and local area network. The new workstations can now prevent premature fatigue, as well as joint and back pain whilst working, all helping to prevent long-term injuries and increase employee satisfaction.

Ergotec is designed to improve comfort and workflow, combining an electronically adjustable base that can be tailor made, with an integrated histopathology specific equipment worktop. The height adjustability between 66cm to 110cm, makes it easy to switch between sitting and standing with just a touch of a button, for users of all sizes. The table has a maximum weight load of 400kg, allowing the operation of high-speed machines vibration and movement free. As well as determining the size of the table required, Ergotec offers additional optional features such as a built-in water bath and cold plate, cable and power management, and LED lighting with optimally coordinated LUX strengths.
