On Thursday 5 June hospital laboratories across the UK marked Biomedical Science Day 2025 - a national celebration of the scientists and laboratory staff whose work underpins patient care.
From early diagnosis to long-term disease monitoring, biomedical scientists and their colleagues perform over 1.5 billion tests a year. Their work supports 85% of all clinical pathways and provides the evidence needed for safe, timely and effective treatment.
This year’s celebrations will include laboratory tours, public stands in hospital foyers, live demonstrations, school visits and interactive displays. Many teams will also be taking part in national competitions, social media takeovers and the popular Harvey’s Lab Tours - which help young patients understand how samples are tested and how science supports their care.
Biomedical Science Day is an annual awareness day hosted by the IBMS. It aims to inform the public and empower patients by explaining key practices in biomedical science and celebrating a profession that is #AtTheHeartOfHealthcare.
The IBMS, with over 21,000 members in 74 countries, is the leading professional body for scientists, support staff, and students in the field of biomedical science. For over 100 years, the IBMS has been dedicated to promoting, developing, and delivering excellence in biomedical science within all aspects of healthcare, ensuring the highest standards of service to patients and the public.
