Turning a corner at Royal Oldham Hospital

When Royal Oldham Hospital, the hub laboratory within the Pennine Acute Hospital, tendered for replacement haematology instrumentation, it was clear that an innovative solution would be required to meet its full automation requirements within a very confined location. The XN Haematology solution from Sysmex is renowned for its high-quality results, high throughput and small footprint, but with a requirement for fully automated ESR testing, and full EDTA solution, fitting a square peg into a round hole was going to be challenging.

Never one to let a challenge put IT off, Sysmex tackled this situation head-on and has recently installed the UK’s first Turn Unit at the Royal Oldham, allowing installation of the XN-9000 solution with a 90°angle, to provide a far more streamlined, Lean workflow process. The laboratory is now benefiting from the fully automated solution it hoped for without the inconvenience of timely and expensive building works or reconfiguration of other services within the laboratory.
