Customised solutions for managing surgical specimens

Menarini has expanded its Surgical Specimen Management portfolio with UltraSAFE, the safe formalin dispensing solution. UltraSAFE provides total safety, standardisation and traceability without the need to change the user’s current process.

Most operating theatres will either use prefilled formalin buckets or manually filled buckets with formalin. Since 2016, formaldehyde has been a Category 1B carcinogen and Category 2 mutagen under the CLP (Classification, Labelling and Packaging) Regulations EC 1272/2008.  Under COSHH there is a duty on employers to reduce exposure to carcinogens to as low a level as reasonably practicable, UltraSAFE does that.

UltraSAFE fully automates the process of formalin dispensing in CE/IVD-certified, tamper-evident and leakproof buckets without exposure to formalin fumes. The process starts with the operator placing the specimen in a bucket, then reading the bucket barcode and the barcode of the request form, permitting full traceability of the specimen. The operator places the bucket inside the instrument and the specimen weight is recorded and formalin dispensed in a standardised ratio. The process is undertaken inside a vented, locked chamber with negative pressure. Automated ultraviolet (UV) disinfection protocols for microorganisms provide additional safety.

The leakproof buckets are easy to stack and available in four sizes (1 L, 3 L, 5 L and 10 L). More details about the UltraSAFE formalin dispensing solution or the full cellular pathology range are available online.
