The Microbiology Society responds to Change NHS consultation

The Microbiology Society has coordinated a response to the consultation launched by the government and NHS England ahead of the 10-Year Plan.

The consultation, detailed at NHS Change, aimed to gather insights and recommendations to shape the future of healthcare in England.

The Microbiology Society consulted with its members working in clinical settings and has submitted a response that reflects their opinions and experiences.

Key points highlighted in the response include:

  • Workforce capacity building: Emphasising the need for robust strategies for recruiting and retaining medical microbiologists, who are crucial for managing antimicrobial resistance and emerging infectious diseases.
  • Preventative measures: Advocating for a focus on prevention, particularly in tackling antimicrobial resistance through diagnostic stewardship, public engagement, and antimicrobial stewardship initiatives.
  • Adoption of diagnostic tools: Encouraging the implementation of cutting-edge diagnostic technologies to improve patient outcomes and streamline care processes, including the use of rapid tests and point-of-care technologies in community settings.
