High dynamic range image-acquisition software

Carl Zeiss is now offering the HDR (high dynamic range) image-acquisition software module for the AxioVision 4.7 analysis program. This enables a camera’s dynamic range to be expanded in order to create high-contrast images. Thus, applications in the life sciences (eg fluorescence microscopy) will benefit from improved image quality.

Automated urine microscopy

Menarini Diagnostics has expanded its urinalysis product range with the launch of a revolutionary automated microscopy analyser. Designed with input from clinical and laboratory urinalysis experts, the sediMAX takes automated urine microscopy to a level of analysis not seen previously.

Accurate determination of MIC values

Oxoid has launched improved M.I.C.Evaluator (M.I.C.E.) strips, which provide accurate determination of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values. The new distinctive gradient format provides excellent contrast against the agar background and the increased font size permits easier reading.

Recombinant virus production and titration in single-kit format

Oxford Expression Technologies (OET) has introduced titrePLUS, a combined expression and titration package that harnesses the simplicity and flexibility of the efficient flashBAC expression system with the ease and speed of baculoQUANT titration.

Kits for real-time quantitative PCR

GRI, an independent supplier of molecular biology solutions, can now supply KAPA SYBR FAST qPCR kits from Kapa Biosystems, which contain the first DNA polymerase evolved for real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) methodology.

Spectrophotometers with USB memory capabilities

Thermo Fisher Scientific has launched the new Thermo Scientific Helios Zeta double-beam and Helios Omega single-beam UV-Visible spectrophotometers. Designed for research, routine quality control and teaching, these costeffective instruments offer excellent throughput and affordable analysis of liquid and solid samples.

Rapid detection of Salmonella species

Capable of detecting Salmonella species within 24 hours, modified semi-solid Rappaport Vassiliadis (MSRV) medium is one of a range of products from Lab M devoted to the detection and isolation of these organisms. The medium offers a simple and rapid means of detecting motile strains of Salmonella, even if they are outnumbered by competitive bacteria by a factor of 107.

Automated microbalances

Mettler Toledo has launched automated versions of its MX5 microbalance and UMX2 ultra microbalance. The MX5 Automated-S and the UMX2 Automated-S are ideal for research and development applications. The new models reduce working time to one-third, enabling greater productivity and ultimately improving cost-effectiveness.

Targeted proteomics analysis

Applied Biosystems and its partner MDS Analytical Technologies has announced the availability of a suite of integrated mass spectrometry-based solutions for quantitative proteomics. Designed for Applied Biosystems/MDS Analytical Technologies’ triple quadrupole and hybrid triple quadrupole/ linear ion trap mass spectrometry systems, these solutions include software packages and consumables that permit the more effective quantification of proteins in biomarker research or cell biology.

Spark-free laboratory refrigeration

Refrigerators, often of a domestic design, used in laboratories have been the cause of potentially fatal explosions. Therefore, minimising the risk of fire through appropriate handling and storage of potentially flammable materials, as well as the installation of proper electrical equipment, is of paramount importance to the medical, laboratory and scientific sectors.

Labelling system designed for the laboratory

The LABXPERT labelling system from Brady is specifically designed for the labelling requirements of the modern laboratory, and is capable of producing clear and permanent labels for virtually any application.

Rapid analysis of Mycoplasma PCR reactions

The ScreenTape system, developed by Lab90 and distributed by Anachem, employs a special microscale polymer tape that contains all the reagents required for DNA electrophoresis. It brings convenience, ease of use and safety to molecular biology, as no handling of gels and buffers is required.

Evolution of automated ELISA processing

Tecan has launched the Freedom EVOlyzer-2 for fully guided, automated processing of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) procedures through its new-generation EVOlution 2.0 software, which offers an exceptionally user-friendly graphical user interface with optional touchscreen and a number of new application-oriented features.

Expanded range of DNA repair antibodies

Stratech Scientific can offer new antibodies from the Novus Biological DNA repair range. This range of DNA repair antibodies covers the major aspects of DNA repair and provides a selection of useful detection tools.

Point-of-care diabetes testing

Siemens has launched the DCA Vantage analyser, a point-of-care (POC) diabetes patient management platform that provides glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c), microalbumin/creatinine and albumin to creatinine tests for diabetes management.

Automated blood fractionation system

RTS Life Science has unveiled its revolutionary automated blood fractionation (ABF) system to the US market. This high-throughput blood fractionation system is used to extract the buffy coat (white blood cells) from whole blood samples.

The ice is right

The new Labcold-ITV icemakers offer optimum performance with a practical and stylish design. Both the Ice Maker 'flake' and Ice Maker 'cube' versions are low-maintenance and available in a variety of sizes for use in laboratories and medical facilities.

Quantitative analysis of Western blots

GRI can now supply the FluorChem Q system from Alpha Innotech. The FluorChem Q is a fully quantitative imaging system for fluorescent and chemiluminescent Western blots, which offers ultimate flexibility for visualising and quantifying samples from a wide variety of sources.

Anaerobic chambers do away with jars

Camlab and Shellab have introduced the Bactron anaerobic chamber to the UK. Already an established technology in the USA, these units are already being used in various UK research facilities.

High-throughput RNA expression analysis

The ScreenTape system, developed by Lab90 and distributed by Anachem, employs a special microscale polymer tape that contains all the reagents required for DNA electrophoresis. It brings convenience, ease of use and safety to molecular biology, as no handling of gels and buffers is required.
